most of my mains are because they’re hot or i want to be them or my pea brain can grasp how they work
I main Bridget because she's cute
its always about playstyle for me if I'm not having fun playing a character even if I think they are a cool character then what's the point in playing the game. of course sometimes I end up maining the character that I think is cool but it doesn't always work out that way and ill have to check out other characters to see who I like to play as the most
i main ky in all the GG games (except Strive, i main Baiken there) because MY BROTHER IN CHRIST HE'S LITERALLY MY HOLE IDEOLOGY OF LIVING and because Holy Orders exisits
Honestly, most of my mains tend to be villains. Ridley and Sephiroth in Smash Ultimate, Belial in Granblue, Akuma in Street Fighter, if it is or was evil at one point, I'm probably playing it.
Why? I like to bring out the best in others, and becoming their personal villain is how I do it. Plus villains are just fun to play. There's few things as satisfying as landing that walk-in counter with Belial or dragging the opponent to the other side of the stage with Ridley, making them fight on your terms or get crushed into paste.
Because Bridget is cute, case closed
I play characters that are:
1) Cool to watch top players play them
2) Easy to win with but you can endlessly improve at all areas of the game
3) Look cool
4) Feels great to play
The first was Melee Falcon now there's Bridget
I only main characters if I think they are cool, funny or if I want to play them for the memes.
Azrael in Blazblue has a "weak spot" mechanic. If you hit someone with specific attacks, they will get a "up" or "down" weak spot and specific special will send the opponent flying either up or to the side. Azrael can dash after them and mash them into the wall which I find extremely funny and cool. For his 2C he literally throws the ground at you. By that, he check the cool and funny requirements.
I have a gambling addiction and managed to quench my thirst for gambling with the help of Dragon Quests and it's casinos. So, naturally, when the Hero from Dragon Quest got in Smash and brought a literal roulette with him, I found my main.
I want to prove that MY character is actually top-tier and no one's tried hard enough.
…also because Anji is hot but a big part of it really is trying to put "low-tier" characters in their best light.
So, I can give examples of mains on all of those different aspects for different mains I have. If we're going by playstyle, look no further than Smash and Ganondorf. I absolutely love the big, heavy hitters, and Ganondorf is one of the best I've played. Sure, he's considered low-tier by competitive standards, but I find him fun to use!
In terms of design, let's jump to BlazBlue with Noel Vermilion. I absolutely love her design, and the fact that she fights with a pair of oversized pistols is just fun as hell! I eventually became a lot better with Iron Tager, once again playing into the heavy hitter types, but I still play Noel now and again to mix things up.
If we're looking at lore, I gotta cheat a little bit and mention the mods for Ultimate Marvel vs Capcom 3. There's one that recently released that includes my favorite character in the entire Marvel canon: Gambit of the X-Men. Not only do I get to play as my favorite mutant, but he's also legitimately good! Sure, he's a bit of a glass cannon, but those are often my second favorite type of characters to play (hence why my normal MvC3 ace team is Haggar, Akuma, and Felicia/Zero).
Finally, going off of the "extension of myself" idea, we have to jump to one that's not really relevant anymore, but it's still a favorite of mine: Dissidia Final Fantasy, and its prequel Dissidia 012. My mains (yeah, there are two) have always been Squall and Terra. Terra was largely for nostalgia reasons, since FF6 has always been my favorite game ever, and she's damn good in-game, too. With Squall, though, I always heavily related to him in FF8, and I got good enough with him that his button setups and abilities all became second nature while playing him. He may not have been who I used to defeat Feral Chaos in 012 (that was Cecil, thanks to an accidental glitch), but he usually mowed down anyone else I put him up against.
(Sorry if this is really long, but it's something I'm kinda passionate about, too. ^^; )
It really depends on how they feel for me, I usually go for rushdown or setup characters because I like using my thinkles, but if their design is cool enough the archetype doesn't matter and I'll force myself to learn it, rule of cool and all that! Great vid!
After i learned all King's command grabs with all routes (including screwdriver), i don't have memory to start learning new charecter in Tekken, because i know, i'll forget everything
I really just imagine me making out with my mains. Not even paying attention to the game, just daydreaming of sloppy tongue wrestling
I main Incineroar in Smash Ultimate because of my love for Pro Wrestling. I grew up a WWE fan and have gone down the rabbit hole in recent years with other wrestling promotions. When he was announced for Ultimate Nov. 2018, I didn't know anything about the character (I'm not a Pokemon fan) and wasn't sold on him entirely at first. I started Ultimate maining the Pits at first. Around late 2019, I decided to try out the big cat after a few attempts of playing him. And from there he grew on me as I said goodbye to the Pits.
I also have three loyalty picks in Smash, those being Luigi, Falco and Yoshi.
What if there's a Character that you think looks cool, has lore you like, the playstyle you enjoy the most, and you feel like it's an extension of yourself
When Bridget released in Strive, I decided to get the game and wanted her to be my main. She had options for most situations, a cool design and an unconventional fighting style. However, the friends I was playing with were struggling at the beginning. Bridget's tools were overwhelming with no clear downsides they could exploit at the time. There was too big of a skill gap and the game was feeling a bit stale for me. So, to handicap myself and give them a better chance, I switched to arguably the worst character in the game at the time, Potemkin.
Despite not liking grapplers in other games, I instantly fell in love. He has large buttons that cover good space, he can rush on in and Pot Buster for 40%, he can stop approaches from the air and much more. All of them do big damage and they all feel so good to land. At first, I didn't like being stuck blocking or being walled out by my opponents, but I was learning each match. Which buttons come out fast, when can I interrupt a blockstring, should I Garuda Impact for a fourth consecutive time. My patience and mid-match labbing may have caused some dumb losses, but it all paid off with knowledge on how to turn the tides into my own favour. Plus he has some funny tech that I can use to my advantage.
Strive Potemkin showed me the fun of grapplers and that being on the defensive isn't always a bad thing. Even now that the skill gap has closed in, I've stuck with him. I like playing with about half of the cast, but Potemkin has stayed my main through it all.
character is edgy and wields sword? ah yes, this is the one
I like playing characters i can sorta relate to or have nostalgia with; or look goofy.
I grew up with mario, so i play mario, and with k rool i love how i can turn my brain off and mash.
Zangief is so cool to me, i like how caring he his and how he wants to help people.
LaDiva is cool, idfk i just like her lmaooo
Axl Low is also really caring and time travel is sick af, and his lore is nice ❤
I like noctis in t7, and i bought ffxv because of it. And im envious of his friend group lol.
Fighting games are so cool, have a sub
I like Shotos, All-rounders, and I usually seem to find myself playing the game's "Ryu."
Examples
Ryu from Streets (of course)
Lucario from Pokken
Ky Kiske from Guilty Gear
Es from BlazBlue (with Narukami/Es being my BBTAG Team)
Kagari from Chaos Code
Raiden from Mortal Kombat
Reimu from the Touhou fighting games
NEW: Fubuki from Idol Showdown
The list goes on
(Edit: I despise playing as Smash's Mario and BlazBlue's Jin, while not being the biggest fan of the MK Ninjas. Hence "Usually.")
