Pat is super right, I tried to watch the movie but lasted until the part after the race, so much cringe I could not stand it, too many characters in one place, total mayhem, and the worst part were the protagonist interactions
Feels like a terrible, money grabbing, lazy hollywood adaptation, looks great but poorly executed, not even spielberg could save it.
So it's bad because of references to video games and pop culture and because leftist males think it's "sexist" because they find literally everything sexist. What an astute review!
Back in reality where we don't base everything off of identity politics and what video games we did or did not play, the movie is actually pretty fucking decent.
So why the hate for Funko Pops exactly? Like, i dislike em too, their designs are basically a bobble head without the bobble. And it bugs me that they're the cheapest option compared to actual detailed figures. But specifically why does the Woolie hole hate and yet consume them?
what woolie is describing is a shitty book it sounds like. it would have been better if the author took a minute to realise the idea of putting asterisks and/or small numbers, and then create an appendix with all the reference lists and what they are at the back of the book.
The reason Ultraman wasn't in the movie wasn't because Tsuburaya productions said no it's because someone else claimed to own Ultraman. So the reason he's not in the movie is because Japan was exploding over WHO OWNS ULTRAMAN?!
I know this is a little late but am I the only one who was super fuckin mad at H's voice in game?!? I could handle the bullshit reason of "Oh even though it's like 204-somethin we still haven't made voice modulator that goes beyond pitch shifting it a pit" BUT THAT'S NOT THE REASON BECAUSE OF FUCKING SHO. That little shit sounds like a young adult in game! It annoys me so much!
By the way I like that Master Chief is his Halo 4/5 design, only for E3 a month later to show Master Chief is back to the his old Halo 2/3 design. (And thank god because his old design is waaaaay better.)
Pat didn't bring up the worst part. The hero at the end is like "yeah we shut the server down on these days so you can be in the real world" fuck off! I play video games to escape the real world why do you get to pick when I game.
If you took away the references from Ready Player One, what would you have? An extremely mediocre, formulaic, forgettable work of fiction that does nothing worth observing. It waving around the skins of things people like doesn't change what it is at the most core level.
Ready Player One is a book about a society with no future trying to escape to a fake past that lacks context because it's impossible to build anything new, and corporations try desperately to control and dominate a cultural sphere they don't understand. The author unknowingly made a crowning tribute and satire of our own cultural decline and that's why RPO is secretly smarter than it was meant to be.
Things they cut: – The Funeral for holiday -Wade being fat -The planet being Fucked to the point Wade wants to leave the solar system – Wade being a low level newbie who can't afford to go anywhere -H posing as a white guy in the Oasis -Irock is a wanna be who hangs out with H and Wade who pretends to be a know it all hotshot and ultimately rats on H and Wade once they get their first key – Sho being Shoto and also Japanese. – The first key being in a dnd module & trail for the key is a duel in Joust – The gate is located in a copy of holiday's childhood bedroom playing on a Tandy & then they play a VR adventure game version of the old movie Wargames where you play the main character. – the second key is VR version of Zork & gate is in the replicant test in the Tyrrell Corp building, the old game black tiger by capcom. Here Wade gets Leopardon from SPIDA MAN sentai. -Daito is killed by IOI in their real world by being tossed out the window and frame it like a suicide. -The dance party where Wade fucks up by telling Artemis he loves her is thrown by "Og", the parter of Holiday, and his character stops the fight. -Wade basically tells H to piss off after his verbal fight with Artemis – Wade shaves his head, buys a fake identity as IOI thinks he's dead and moves to major city near Oasis' main servers, becomes a recluse who lives under an assumed name literally spends all day working out using a VR rig that has a run pad where he has to physically walk and run in order to go anywhere in oasis. buys a sex doll (not joking) and is generally in a meh state. -IOI get the thrid key first, Wade finds the key but is unable to think of a way to get to the third gate, which is on a custom DnD campaign planet . – He becomes desperate enough to purposefully allow himself to be captured using fake debt he put on the false identity to allow him to basically become indentured to IOI – he is able to hack Into IOI on the inside and grab the information they have on everyone and the 3rd gate, including the video of Daito's death and then escape by zeroing out his fake debt. – Og reveals he's been watching the events unfold using admin access to spy on the protagonist group and wants to help more directly -invites Wade and the other 3 leads who are alive (Shoto, H & Artemis) to come to his place to fight the final fight, Artemis and Shoto arrive first as they're not anywhere near H & Wade are. – this is when we find out H is a lesbian woman as she explains her back story as her and Wade drive. – Artemis, who has never met Wade in person in the book at this point refuses to see him until its over though he's wanting to see her – turns out you need 3 people who have the crystal key to get into the gate , so you can't enter the gate. -the Final gate is a VR recreation of Monty Python and the holy grail. – Wade Watts meets Samantha Cook for the first time in the garden of Og's home and the book ends before they talk.
it's overall a lot of radical changes, some for IP reasons but others because of time and feel good factor, I'd like to see RP1 properly done as an HBO style mini series. but yeah can't win em all
Some people seemed to think that the use of the iron giant “defeated the arc of his character” despite being essentially a skin with special abilities being played by someone.
The fact that this movie is bad is the reason the references are so bad. If it weren't for the references, this movie would have been forgotten as just a mediocre movie. The only reason people even talk about it is because of the references. Its 100% unearned
I love that Matt is looking at his phone when he doesn't look like he wants to kill himself.
Which number podcast is this?
53:50 holy shit that's perfect

Shitty wreck it Ralph the movie
The irony of sitting in front of a board covered with retro game characters while bitching about all the retro game references in a movie.
So why the hate for Funko Pops exactly?

ernest clowne
I forgot about this until about a week or two ago because it came out on DVD and we have copies at the place I work.
By the way I like that Master Chief is his Halo 4/5 design, only for E3 a month later to show Master Chief is back to the his old Halo 2/3 design.

Glad to know my predictions were spot on.
better than the book

Ready Player One was made for the sole purpose of letting a bunch of jackasses on Youtube make 20min long montages of all the dumb references.
Pat: "…it's Iron giant, a movie that I have not seen, for the record."
Matt: "That explains a lot about you."
It really does xD
You know what would have been actually interesting?
If the actresses that played Aech and Artemis were reversed. Deal with that situation, dude.
If you took away the references from Ready Player One, what would you have? An extremely mediocre, formulaic, forgettable work of fiction that does nothing worth observing. It waving around the skins of things people like doesn't change what it is at the most core level.
RPO uses the same formula that the Wayans Brothers used with Scary Movie to make comedy, only RPO used it to get "I know this thing!" feelings.
I loved Matt's deadpan "why" at the beginning there.

Ready Player One reads and watches like a bunch of boomers who read about Millenial video game and Internet culture and didn't get any of it.
Some people seemed to think that the use of the iron giant “defeated the arc of his character” despite being essentially a skin with special abilities being played by someone.
24:52. There is ONE problem with the CG… It's in this freaking movie!!!
