You got so lucky with that chest. I’m doing my own 100% playthrough, and I have been stuck on the last chest for over thirty attempts. It is worth the item, but I want to pull my hair out. I figured that if anyone could possibly understand, you are the guy.

Easiest way to crack the side quest for this.

Perhaps the many people who hate this game do it the hard way. Allow me to explain it to you the easy way.
Use mathematics here. If you get 4 different numbers, 4x3x2x1= 24. 24 different combinations. 3 numbers? 3x2x2x1= 12. 2 numbers? 2x2x1x1 = 4. That's the trick to it. It is vital to write them all down, because this is where the process of elimination comes into play. Say you get 0123 as the four numbers. Your combinations are as followed.

013 103 203 302
021 120 210 310
023 123 213 312
031 130 230 320
032 132 231 321

The response you get when the chest doesn't open will tell you how close you are. If you get "…", you're getting there. At least one, but no more than two, of your numbers is in the correct place. If you get "# of tries left" (like 8 tries left), that means not only is it completely wrong, but any combination with those numbers in that particular spot will be wrong, also, as those numbers are not correct.

Cross it out. Not only is 012 wrong, but ALL combinations of numbers that would have a 0 in the hundreds(left) spot, a 1 on the tens (middle), and/or a 2 in the ones (right) will not work. So you can cross out those.

If done correctly, you get this

Cross it out, but make a note of it. You have one number in the correct place.

Repeat.

Response: "6 tries left"

Cross out any combination that would have 1 in the left, 3 in the middle, and 0 in the right. After eliminating them, you have these three to choose from

If you took the notes on the numbers that gave you …, the 103 and the 301 for example, proper strategy will reveal that you had the 0 in the correct place. You enter 201, and the chest opens.

Cracking this pattern, except for the Ultimate Wargod, I get the chest open every time I try it, even 4 tries left with the Talisman. Getting the Ultimate Wargod takes careful strategy and lots of luck, but this guide makes it easier. Keep in mind that when you have a repeat number, it may help, but it can also disadvantage you just as much on the attempts with less allotted tries. The Phantom Ship drove me nuts. I love the atmosphere, the concept and the music, but the at times unavoidable contact battles made navigating the ship to attempt to open the chest a huge hassle.

Playing through the game again now and got the magical hat on my first try 😂.

I only played one run of this game and I never bothered leveling up Shana's dragoon. Damn. I regret missing out on that spell.
