I always loved Sanji's backstory. The kindness of a character that went through such a desperate situation and isn't willing to let anyone else suffer it, no matter who it is. I also love the "found family" trope, big reason why I am into one piece. I just loved the straw hat family.
I remember whole cake messing with me, a lot. Like, Sanji has always been there willing to sacrifice himself for the others since he got in the crew. He was there for Robin in Enies Lobby, he knows the extent they would go for him and yet he did it anyway. Then you get the extended backstory and the disgusting family he comes from. All those sacrifices take a more… concerning perspective. Was he protecting their friends or was it a "I gotta prove I'm useful" sort of mentality he developed due to the Vinsmokes? Did he do everything because he seriously thought he wasn't WORTH fighting for?
As someone who had self esteem issues I couldn't help but feel that. Whole Cake will always be among my favorites for the arc they gave to Sanji. I love what Oda did with his character across Whole Cake and Wano
