I disagree. With better mechanics, he could have tipped the ball to the teammate behind him. He ultimately made the correct decision with the approach, but the touch is what was executed poorly.
It's less taking a wider turn, and more realizing that you need to use the time you have where you are unsure what to do and put yourself in a good position.
You never want to be in a position where you are waiting for the ball to do something predictable. That means you're either not pushing or defending the ball when you should, or you're not positioning yourself properly for anything to happen.
Also, if you're waiting, it probably means you're not moving. A moving car is more likely to win the ball compared to a car that has to move from being stopped.
