30 Gedanken zu „Discussing the Differences Between Game Boy Generations“
  1. The original screen is garbage. But what do you think of the dmg color mod? I think it's by mousebite labs, but it's a whole new pcb that uses a color cpu and the q5 screen kits. With the space for a larger battery it's something I want to do. It's also a good way to recycle gameboys with corrosion issues.

  2. I've been around since before the GBC and I learned quite a bit! Never knew Nintendo used Black Blobs in the newer DMGs, gross. I still forget the old pokemon games were playable on game boy sometimes cause even tho I got them when they came out I'm pretty sure in the US at least they released I think a couple months before the GBC? I remember they were the first games I got with my GBC at least and I was playing them very early. I always wondered about the game boy light cause it's the only model I never owned. I wonder how bright the originals were cause I do notice with my old watches as well that the EL is much more dim.

I wish the micro line continued just a bit longer, I love its form factor but I always wished it played GB/GBC even though it'd look ridiculous. I waved it off as stupid when it came out since the SP 2.0 was like the same price but the screen is really nice. I think it's mostly due to being smaller, but I still use my famicom one I got before prices got insane pretty much every day lol.

I remember even when the GBA was newish there were frontlight kits (afterburner I think?) cause I knew someone with one and while it probably sucks now I was super jealous of it. For whatever reason everyone just put up with worm lights till then but I remember a lot of people were upset about the backlight thing till the SP came out.

  3. Excellent video. Perhaps you can review GBA games or talk about obscure GBA accessories, hardware, or games (fanmade too) even though others have done it but it's always good to hear it from someone else.

  4. That moment when you were watching an hour plus long video, pause at the 50-minute mark and come back later to find it's been edited to 5 minutes long. That aside, your rambles are nice to have playing in the background!

Edit: Came back to check, and the full video is back, huzzah!

  5. I've owned a Gen 2 Pokemon game for about 20 years now, and just the other day I found out gold and silver are backwards compatible with the original Gameboy. Since I never owned and original gameboy. just a color and advanced sp this came as quite the surprise to me lol.

  6. I wish I had this video 10-15 years ago when I was trying to get my buddy's DS lite to play gameboy color and DMG cartriges. I figured out the GBA's cartridge switch for switching the circuits between GBA and GBC, and realized it was a physical block in the DS preventing the carts from slotting in, so what did I do? I chopped the corners off 3 or 4 cartriges (incuding pokemon silver >.<) before testing it. Of course it didnt work and I was left with a few mangled games. Thankfully, with a little super glue and the plastic bits I chopped off, the games were restored to playability, but every time I pull out my gameboy games and see it, I kick myself.

  7. For a little context, the GameBoy Light was released only about 3 months before the Color in Japan and as you said, that's the reason it was never released outside of Japan.

The Light was supposed to be the definitive 8 bit GameBoy before switching to something like the Advance a few years later, but when Bandai announced the WonderSwan, Yamauchi (Nintendo's CEO at this time) was worried that they would lose their commercial edge, so he needed something to hit back quickly. GBA's development was already started at this time, but it was put on hold to create a "color version" of the original GameBoy, based more or less on the Pocket's design, hence the GameBoy Color.

The CGB was actually not very popular amongst Nintendo's engineer, because it was seen as a nuisance to their bigger project that was the Advance, but the rest is history : the Color was a huge (and pretty unexpected) success, at the point where developers had to hire back Z80 programmers to make games for that "new support", and ultimately, it overshadowed the WonderSwan completely, but also the Neo Geo Pocket, and all of their latter iterations. The WonderSwan never saw the outside of Japan, and the Neo Geo Pocket, despite beign really nice and having SNK, Sega and Capcom's support, remained pretty confidential, both in the US than in Europe, where it was officially released. It also probably pushed back the Advance by at least one year …

  8. What I am wondering Makho is do you have a microscope!? And if not how do you do for those micro micro work sometime or for repairing a trace on a PCB 😭!? And if yes what is it and why don't you use it more often!? Yeah.. I'll stop here looool
