  1. Old consoles are too often thrown away or cannibalized because of a not working drive. There is this common thought that once the drive has problems then it must be a burned out laser. But my experience says that it is far less the issue.

A good clean of the laser assembly and regreasing of the gliders often does the trick. I can not imagine how many good consoles have been destroyed because of people trying to adjust the power to the laser or just giving up on it in total.

Thank you for showing what should always be your first step when having reading problems. Now I hope people will actually do it.

  2. Ridge Racer and Revolution aren't too taxing on the drives as they both load the entire game into memory, it's just reading the music from then on.

If you want a game that REALLY gives the lasers something to work on, get a copy of Crash Bandicoot 1. Naughty Dog essentially hacked the PS1 to essentially have the whole game streaming off the disc constantly. Sony hated it as they were paranoid it would destroy users consoles!

  3. Drive malfunction is the most trivial malfunction. You can always simply put in another one.
Would really like to see some motherboard/ IC's malfunctions and ways to diagnose them. Check broken fuses etc.
