Ret was best in bc, holy pally was God tier in wrath and people always say it was ret. I started in bc, my first character was a retribution paladin and never had issues, but in wotlk I had my holy spec healing and doing more damage and I was undergeared the whole time. Once I got good holy gear I was always top 5 DPS and best tank healer. Always loved my paladins, but mage was and still is my main to this day since bc. Pally will always be good for pure versatility and does well for anyone even if they don't know how to play it, but I feel like if you know how the class and spec play you will always be top tier. This is why esfand is my favorite paladin player, dude legitimately understands all aspects of being a paladin in WoW and when I ran in to esfand in arenas or battlegrounds back in the day I'd always be nervous facing him just like with bajheera. Fyi he is doing the classic hardcore stuff on his warrior and perhaps you and him can run a few dungeons if you hit him up
