Regarding trades, I feel you should only be allowed to make them if you're trading someone who also meets the draft conditions (in this case, 5 or less letter last name). Trading players who don't meet the conditions or picks kinda breaks the spirit of the draft challenge

Do a reverse draft! Wherever you draft them is where you play them, so you start with the backup goalie and if you draft a 87 then the 87 is your backup, when you're drafting a 4th line if you get a 86 then he's playing on the 4th line. You're essentially just flipping the lines. You may ask, "why not just draft a team and edit the lines like that", well because it's supposed to be a challenge and its more challenging when you have to draft a 1st line and there's only low overall players available.
