  1. This run is a showcase of how good Blizzard and Ice Beam are. I would even go as far as to say that if you were to take Pokemon like Weedle and Caterpie and give them any additional move in the game, choosing one of those (preferably Ice Beam for the double pp) would make the run possible, at first glance more so than choosing any other move in gen1.

  2. The ice type is way better in gen 1 than it is in later generations. No steel type, almost no rock or fighting moves getting used, fire doesn't resist it, a lot of powerful pokemon being part flying. Even without factoring in the 120 power, 90% accurate move with a de facto 10% chance to KO things it was a genuinely solid typing. It was really only starting in gen 2 that Gamefreak started to drop a hot stinky one on top of it.

  3. me and articuno have a long, personal history where it was this complete beast in every game i fought it in as a youth

in blue it kept destroying me because unlike the other two, it actually had a dangerous move, but eventually, i got ahold of it and it went from a nightmare to a "cool" ally

so nowadays I like to masterball articuno and hold onto it to freeze mewtwo later

you absolutely did articuno justice by beating mewtwo's time with 0 losses

  4. The only thing preventing Ice from being the worst type is how strong Ice is as an attacking type. Getting STAB on arguably the best attacking type in the game matters a lot. Bug, for example, has a better resistance spread, but having 7 resists on your STAB and hitting worse types for weakness makes it ultimately worse.

The situation changes quite a bit in RBY though. Fighting type basically doesn't exist and anything that runs rock slide can't take a Blizzard. Fire is never used for coverage, and Fire types don't resist Ice. Meanwhile resisting Ice and being immune to freeze are super valuable and Blizzard has 90 accuracy. So unlike in later gens, Cloyster, Lapras, Articuno, and Jynx love being Ice type. In fact, Dewgong is the only Ice type not usable in OU, and it still does well for itself in UU.
